Thanksgiving
Take the time to remember...
The Retirementeering™ Newsletter
The period of time between when you wake up and when you actually get out of bed is often filled with scattered, semi-waking thoughts. Yesterday, my thoughts consisted of thinking back over all the Thanksgivings past, the different people I have shared them with, the places I have been on those occasions, and the memories each took on. Thanksgiving Day is a good time to stop briefly and reflect.
I was home with my family for the first dozen or so Thanksgiving holidays, and our celebration was traditional. We would gather in the dining room of the farmhouse in Pennsylvania, where we grew up. Dinner was the traditional turkey and side dishes, and we would usually overindulge, as many across the country will today. It was a special meal shared with family and an occasional family friend.
The true meaning of Thanksgiving didn’t really sink in until I began spending the holiday away from home. Although those Thanksgiving meals were a lot of fun, happening in far-flung places with new acquaintances and close friends from college days. At some point, I would find myself thinking back to the simple pleasure of sharing Thanksgiving dinner at home on the farm with my family.
So, no matter where you spend your Thanksgiving this year or who you share your meal with, stop briefly to think back to when it was just you and your family sharing Thanksgiving dinner at home. Long before anyone thought of cellphones, and conversations flowed easily around the table. It was a simpler time, and life was good. The advent of the digital age and the internet brought us many conveniences, yet life is different now, and not everything is necessarily better for the sake of convenience.
We have lived in a time of such sweeping technological advances that it’s refreshing to stop and remember a time, not so long ago, when life was unencumbered by electronics, and the true meaning of Thanksgiving had everything to do with spending quality time at home with your family.
Happy Thanksgiving!
